Founded in 1326, Clare College was the first of the Oxford and Cambridge colleges to provide for Masters, Fellows and Scholars in one community.  Clare College houses 460 undergraduate students, 300 graduate students and 100 fellows in several beautiful courts and facilities.  Students can enjoy picturesque strolls around Memorial Court, the Forbes-Mellon library and the Clare Gardens as they undertake supported and renowned academic study.  Clare College also provides students with a holistic university experience through various societies and activities.

Financial support

Clare College has Hardship Funds available for students with financial difficulties.  There are also grants for travel and research purposes.  Clare College students who take a language course at the Cambridge University Language Programme can have half the course fees subsidized by the College.  There are also various awards, such as the Thirkill Award or the Beatson Award, for exceptional students.

Accommodation

Undergraduate accommodation is provided for three years.  All first years live in Memorial, Thirkill and Lerner Courts, creating a community within which students can socialize and get to know each other.  Student rooms have access to small kitchens equipped with kettles, toasters, microwaves, two ring hobs and a fridge.  All rooms are fully furnished with desks, tables, chairs, beds and wardrobes.  Clare College is catered, with students having a variety of meal options available in the Dining Hall for a subsidized cost.

There are a variety of accommodation options available for postgraduate students, with graduate rooms located in houses in close proximity to the campus.  Clare College attempts to house all postgraduate students for the official length of their course and has designated postgraduate accommodation officers to help with facilitating a smooth transition.

Sports

Clare College has plenty of sports on offer, with men’s and women’s football teams, several rugby teams, a mixed netball team, a hockey team and more.  These are mainly held at local sports facilities, with a boating club also located nearby.

Welfare

All students are allocated a personal tutor who students can go to for advice and support.  There is also a registered nurse and a registered mental health nurse on site, offering advice on mental health concerns, disability and health advice.  Additionally, welfare officers work alongside the College Pastoral team to provide support to the student body.

Miscellaneous
  • Clare College has a range of beautiful gardens such as the Sunken Garden and the Tropical Garden.  These are available for students to socialize and relax in. 
  • Clare College is home to several pieces of renowned art, including sculptures by Michael Bolus, as well as a life-size bronze sculpture of the Chinese sage, Confucius
  • The Forbes Melton Library contains over 30,000 books as well as several computer rooms and printing facilities for students
  • Clare College puts on several musical events each year, with performances from orchestras, choirs and jazz ensembles
