Fitzwilliam College was founded in 1869 and is home to around 480 undergraduate students, 500 graduate students and 90 fellows.  It is the 7th largest of the Cambridge colleges and has produced several notable figures in politics and science.  Fitzwilliam College has a strong sporting reputation, with it being the first college in the Cambridge University Association Football League to win all 4 major university men’s football titles in one season.  However, students can enjoy much more than sports at Fitzwilliam College, as it has a range of societies and activities for students to enjoy.

Financial support

Fitzwilliam College provides a Hardship Fund for its students, supporting those who are going through unexpected financial difficulties.  Funds also exist for those with travel or research related expenses.  The College also provides grants towards language courses, charitable projects, sport music and drama.  Scholarships and prizes are on offer for exceptional academic or sport performance.

Societies

Societies at Fitzwilliam College include:

Accommodation

Accommodation is guaranteed to all undergraduates during term time, with a range of room sizes and features available.  First year accommodation is all on the main College site, with all first year rooms being equipped with a shower and washbasin.  In subsequent years, students enter a ballot and can be given the choice of living on the main site or in College-owned houses in the local area.  Rooms vary from £130 per week to £180 per week.

All new postgraduate students are guaranteed a room, either on the College site or in a College house.  Students in further years of postgraduate study are also provided with accommodation provided they are eligible to enter the ballot for housing.  Rooms vary from fully en-suite to shared toilets and showers.  There are 35 rooms for postgraduate students on the main College site, with the rest located in the local area.  Rooms vary from £130 per week to £180 per week.

Sports

Fitzwilliam College has a number of sports teams both male and female.  This includes badminton, basketball, football, rowing and many more.  On site, students can benefit from a 2 story multi-gym, squash courts and table tennis tables, with playing fields also a short distance away.

Welfare

Fitzwilliam College has a designated College nurse for minor illness or advice.  The Porters office is also available to offer immediate support in the case of an emergency.  Undergraduate tutors can provide information, advice and guidance to students on matters both academic and personal.

Miscellaneous
  • Barbecues and garden parties are held at the Grove Lawn in summer after exams
  • Students can spot wildlife living amongst Fitzwilliam’s scenic site, with deer, owls, foxes and hedgehogs often seen there
  • Fitzwilliam College boasts a 250 seat Auditorium where plays, shows and musical performances are regularly displayed
  • Creative students can book to make use of the College’s Art studio, which is located a few minutes from the main site
