St John’s College was founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort.  It is one of the largest Cambridge Colleges in terms of student numbers, with the student body consisting of 660 undergraduate students and 320 postgraduate students.  It is well known for the Lady Margaret Boat Club, which is the oldest in the university, and for its academic record, with over 30% of students achieving a First Class in their degree.

Financial support

St John’s has a Hardship fund for any student who experiences unexpected financial difficulties.  There are also a number of grants for study-related expenses, as well as prizes for excellence in sport and studies.  Furthermore, St John’s has announced a Free Places initiative to fully fund the education and living costs of some students from lower-income backgrounds beginning in October 2023.

Accommodation

St John’s guarantees accommodation for the duration of an undergraduate course.  All rooms are single and fully furnished, with all rooms having access to shared kitchen facilities.  There are a variety of en-suite and rooms with shared bathrooms available.  

St John’s also endeavors to offer accommodation to all its postgraduate students, with most students staying in College-owned hostels within a few miles of the site.  All hostels have shared kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities.  Room charges are between £500 and £785 per month according to the size of the room.

Sports

The College has an extensive sports ground across the road, with pitches for football, rugby, cricket, hockey and lacrosse as well as a number of playing courts for sports like tennis and squash.  There are a number of sports teams that accommodate players of all abilities.

Welfare

St John’s College has 2 registered College Nurses who can help with issues with physical and mental wellbeing.  Student’s Tutors can also provide advice on a multitude of issues and can refer students onwards to more suitable resources
