Harris Manchester College (Oxford): Detailed Guide, General Information and Contacts

Compare (0)

Harris Manchester College is the only college in the University of Oxford that accepts students over the age of 21 only. This applies to both undergraduates and graduates. The name comes from the founding of the college as Manchester Academy in 1786, in Manchester. The college location moved permanently to Oxford over 100 years later. The college is relatively small compared to other colleges, with less than 200 students, approximately. It practises an open belief system, which began with the unique co-educational aspect of the college in the 1890’s and has continued today, to the open spirited Chapel, which is open to all, regardless of belief or denomination. The rooms have access to a communal launderette and shared kitchens. The majority of rooms are en-suite. Priority is always given to students who have accommodation related requirements owing to disabilities. Students are not normally permitted in colleges during holiday periods, but they may store their belongings in college, with the agreement of the housekeeper. More information can be found here.

Sports

Harris Manchester is a short walk from the University Club astroturf and sports facilities. Since the College is a relatively small one, students often team up with Mansfield College and Wadham College for inter-collegiate sports, and HMC members make up a decent size of the Wadham Boat club.

Welfare

The Harris Manchester College has a lot of support available for students struggling with personal or academic issues. These services range from peer supporters (trained students who struggling peers can talk to) to supervising and senior tutors who are a part of the university counselling service.
