Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) is one of the biggest colleges at Oxford. Founded in the 19th century, it was Oxford’s first womens-only college, starting with only 9 women! It was the first College at Oxford University to introduce a Foundation Year for under-represented students. Lady Margaret boasts stunning gardens and striking architecture for students, staff and visitors to enjoy. Whilst small, the LMH chapel is one of the most beautiful and well designed pieces of architecture across all of Oxford designed by the prestigious Giles Scott himself.
Matthew Dean – Medicine:
“LMH is a friendly and vibrant college with a great atmosphere and culture. There is a nice balance of work and social activities and great support in place for the time where life or work becomes overwhelming. It is easily one of the most laid back and friendly college settings. The tutors, particularly in my course, are some of the best at Oxford and do everything in their power to help you succeed in your respective field. If you are thinking of doing Medicine (or any other subject, really) I highly recommend LMH.”

Accommodation | Most of LMH’s accommodation is on site, in the Central North Oxford conservation area. The undergraduate rooms are single student bedrooms, with a mix of en-suites and shared bathrooms. Most first-years are housed in non-en-suite rooms. The buildings have small communal kitchens, and some have shared bathrooms between 6-8 residents. After the first year, students are allocated rooms through a ballot system. Students are required to vacate their rooms outside of term time but may be allowed to stay for a nightly fee. Otherwise, lockable storage is available for students to leave their belongings. More information on undergraduate accommodation is available here. For graduate students, LMH has a range of single study bedrooms, mostly located in the Clore Graduate Centre, although some are in the more historic buildings adjacent to the College site. There is no accommodation offered for couples, families, or students on part-time programmes. More information is available here. A cashless system is operated in the Dining Hall, where items are charged to student accounts via their University Card. Breakfast is priced at a reasonable £3.90 for five items and a drink and lunch and dinner cost between £3.50 and £4.40 depending on the number of items you purchase. In addition to this, every Friday the college runs a formal hall. This is a chance for students to have a restaurant quality meal in the dining hall within a formal environment. Tickets are £12 and it is possible to bring one guest from another college or university. It is a great way to introduce your friends at other universities to the Oxford lifestyle. |
Sports | Lady Margaret Hall has a plethora of sports facilities including two tennis courts, a netball court, and a football pitch. LMH also shares a sports field with Trinity College alongside a College boathouse! There is an indoor gym, with an annual fee. Like all Oxford Colleges, there are numerous rowing teams, each welcoming varying levels of skill. |
Welfare | The College asks all students to register with the College medical practice along with the Banbury Road Medical Centre about a mile from the college. During term time, College doctors are available on-site every Tuesday with appointments made available through the GP or College nurses. The nurses themselves are always available for any minor physical ailments or any mental health concerns. The common rooms have annually elected welfare officers. There are also welfare sessions such as Welfare Tea, post-bop brunches and more for students to attend. |
