New College was founded in the 14th century by the Bishop of Winchester initially as ‘the college of St Mary in Winchester in Oxford’ and was the largest college in Oxford at the time. The College has a rich cultural, sporting, and musical life with the Clore Music studios being a 2-minute walk from college, as well as the sports ground being a few minutes away too. The College is renowned for its beautiful gardens where students can study, the striking architecture and large grounds. The College houses approximately 400 undergraduate students and has a thriving JCR and MCR.

Location

New College is in the heart of the city, which offers convenient access to many university departments, as well as the city centre which is a 10-minute walk away. The main entrance is on Holywell Street and is bordered by Hertford, All Souls and St Edmund Hall.

Accommodation

Accommodation is provided close to or in College for all undergraduate students in their first, second and fourth years. All first-years undergraduates are allocated a room in College, and currently it is the same for second years. College rooms for second, third- and fourth-year undergraduates are allocated by ballots. More information can be found here.

Graduate students are not guaranteed accommodation, but many are housed for one year. College-owned graduate accommodation is mainly situated at the Weston Buildings, a 7-minute walk from the College. All these rooms are single study bedrooms, and bathrooms are shared between two rooms. The rooms are on a self-catering basis. More information can be found here.

Sports

New College excels in inter-college competitions, reaching the final stages in many sports, including rugby and football. The sports teams are male and female and include, but aren’t limited to, football, rowing, tennis, netball, hockey, mixed lacrosse and more. New College has its own sports ground located a few minutes’ walk away from the College. The sports facilities include a main field, hard courts for tennis, basketball and netball, squash court, and more. New College students can also use the university gym at the Iffley Sports Ground for free, and have access to the swimming pool at a discounted rate.

Welfare

New College has an appointed senior member of the College who is the Tutor for Welfare. As well as this, the College has a dedicated welfare team and JCR and MCR Welfare Officers. More information can be found here.

  • New College has a band room, a soundproofed underground room which is free for anyone to use and is normally used for open mic nights and similar events.
  • The College is famous for its beautiful gardens, which make for a lovely environment to study in.
