St John’s College was founded in the 16th century by Sir Thomas White, a wealthy London merchant tailor and took over the premises of St Bernard’s College, a college for the education of Cistercian monks studying at Oxford University. St John’s is the wealthiest College in Oxford, and as such, has cheaper accommodation and meals rates than other colleges. The College is amongst the most academic in Oxford, but students still have fun with there being four bops a term as well as other entertainment organised by the active JCR.
