Worcester College was founded in the 18th century and is known for its 26 acres of beautiful grounds featuring numerous green spaces, ducks, an orchard, and the College sports field. The College values welfare very highly and has a number of avenues of support for College members with any kind of problem. There are generally 3 bops a term, where two take place in the college bar, and the third takes place in a club. Other regular social events include themed evenings, comedy nights, and charity auctions amongst other events.

Financial support

Newnham College offer grants for books, equipment, travel, music and sport, allowing students to claim back for expenses related to their education and extracurricular activities.  As well as this, there are prizes available for displaying excellence in sports, music and several subjects.  Finally, hardship funds are available for students who encounter unexpected financial hardship.

Accommodation

The Newnham College rooms available for undergraduate students are all located on one site around the gardens, allowing for students to build a close knit community and get to know each other in their first year.  All rooms are fully furnished and have access to shared kitchen facilities, with a range of en-suite rooms and shared bathrooms based on the students’ preference.  Newnham College guarantee accommodation for at least the first 3 years of a student’s course.  Rooms cost roughly £160 per week.

Postgraduate students are all offered single study bedrooms in a range of college-owned buildings.  Some buildings are located on the main College site, with the other rooms situated in housing owned by the College a short distance away.  Each house has shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and all rooms come fully furnished.  Rent varies from £135 per wee to £165 per week.

Sports

Newnham College is a short distance away from the University Sports Centre and has a proud tradition of sporting excellence.  Newnham students have previously captained Cambridge Athletics, Water Polo, Rugby and Volleyball amongst many more.  Newnham College also have a wide variety of its own teams, competing in sports such as Table Tennis, Basketball, Football, Lacrosse and many more.

Welfare

Newnham College has a dedicated College Nurse available to provide support and advice on both physical and mental wellbeing.  A College Counsellor is also available for support with mental health and can direct students on to further services if appropriate.  The Porters’ Lodge is available 24/7 to provide help in an emergency and there is a ‘College family’ system to help new students acclimatize to their surroundings.

Miscellaneous
  • Newnham College have a designated Art Room complete with drawing easels, tables, art supplies, sewing machines and materials.  This is available for all students to use and the Arts and Photographic Society also hold regular workshops there
  • The ADC is the oldest University playhouse in the UK and is home to performances courtesy of Newnham students.  There are usually 2 shows a night held there, combining elements of drama, music and comedy
  • Newnham College students can enjoy the College’s expansive grounds, including lawns, a wildflower meadow, a rose garden and an orchard.  Student’s can also work on a permaculture garden where they can grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs
