Law Personal Statement – Motivation for Law

3 min read
  • Your personal statement for law school is your application for a three-year legal degree. Three years is a long time, and if you are not sincerely committed to law, you will not succeed!
  • It might be difficult to define exactly what drives you to law, so here are a few items to consider that can help you figure it out…
  • How did I decide to pursue a career in law?
  • Perhaps you studied it as an A-Level subject or love its multidisciplinary nature?
  • Which subjects excite and fascinate you the most after reviewing the course structure?
  • Is the thought of becoming a lawyer as well as the actual study of law exciting to me?
  • Keep in mind that you can pursue a career as a lawyer.
    • Remember that you may become a lawyer without earning a law degree (you can earn another degree and convert), so consider why you want to study law and why you might want to pursue law as a career.

EXAMPLE

Law has also piqued my interest. I like the notion of being a lawyer and am aware that it is a lucrative professional option. I used to compare myself to characters on SUITS when I was younger, and I’ve known since then that I wanted to be a lawyer.

BREAKDOWN

This student does not provide any compelling grounds for their interest in law, and the tutor relies only on their word! Furthermore, the student neglects to mention that they are applying to study law rather than become a lawyer. How would the instructor know that you are ready to study law rather than merely interested in working in the legal field?

Law Personal Statement: EXAMPLE

I am a student who appreciates the range of A-level topics, especially the ability to do work in both rule-based quantitative subjects such as math and chemistry and opinion-based qualitative subjects such as geography and English. My interest in law stemmed from my liking of academic diversity, as I realise that its interdisciplinary character allows me to examine and apply regulations as well as write and think creatively.

BREAKDOWN

This student expresses their personal reason for studying law. It is apparent that individuals have given considerable thought to what studying law entails, and their desire to pursue a law degree is inextricably linked to the character and skills of a legal degree.

BEST ADVICE!

Because you don’t have to become a lawyer with a law degree, and the university wants to know how excellent a student you will be rather than how good a lawyer you could be in your career, you should focus on your reason to study law rather than your drive to practise law.

Notice when the student applies for a practising law position rather than an educational degree in this sample statement section…

With my argumentative and debating talents, I believe I would be able to win cases as a lawyer. I’m interested in the range of work that a lawyer does on a daily basis, such as reviewing cases, visiting with clients, and arguing in court. I believe I am uniquely qualified for a post in interacting and collaborating with clients and engaging in the various decision-making process.
