St Hilda’s College was founded in the 19th century, as a hall for women and remained a women’s college until 2008. The College now has almost equal numbers of men and women at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The College has a family of college cats, and has great success in Cuppers competitions. In 2021, 93% of undergraduates achieved a 2:1 or higher in their finals. The College is one of the more relaxed colleges where students are allowed to walk on the grass, and rent out free punts on site during the summer term.

St Hilda’s College is located on Cowley Place, a beautiful riverside site with easy access to the sports complex and East Oxford.

Financial support

St Hilda’s College has an extensive range of funds that provide current students with the opportunity to apply for grants and bursaries. These funds include academic funds, travel funds, research funds and internship awards. After graduation, there are a few prizes to assist students in postgraduate research.

Accommodation

All first-year undergraduates are guaranteed College accommodation. These rooms are study rooms and have a washbasin. Shared bathrooms are shared between 12-13 students and there are around 3 bathrooms and a kitchen area on each floor. Second and third years are also offered accommodation but some prefer to live out. These are allocated through a ballot system. Students are normally required to vacate their rooms during holiday time.

Accommodation for graduate students is allocated on a first come first served basis. The College can offer rooms to almost all first- and second- year graduates who wish to stay in College accommodation. There is no accommodation for couples or families. Most graduate accommodation is located near to Cowley Road, which has a number of shops and restaurants, and is only a 10-minute walk from College. Sports

St Hilda’s College allows students free access to the Iffley Road Gym. There are many male and female teams including unique sports like trampolining, skiing, and kayaking. Sports can be played at any level from casual involvement to college team level.

Welfare

St Hilda’s College allocates undergraduate students Personal Tutors and College Advisors who are available for any general consultations, whether academic or personal. The College Dean holds regular consultation hours in College and there is other support available including support from Peer Supporters, Junior Deans, Harassment Advisors, and more.

Miscellaneous
  • St Hilda’s has a large library with over 70,000 books and 158 seats. This is because St Hilda’s was a female-only college and women were not permitted to use the main University libraries.
  • St Hilda’s operates an annual Arts Week which bring the college together through creative and artistic enterprises.
