The LNAT is certainly a very confusing law exam which can be complicated to understand. These 10 LNAT tips and tricks break down the law exam and give you extremely simple and efficient hacks that will help you score high marks and go into the law exam feeling confident!
LNAT Tips 1. A small step every day can lead to big results
Small steps can lead to big results, which will be evident in your final mark! While practice can sometimes seem never ending and you see only small changes in your marks, it will all be worth it in the end!
Here is a little list of small things and handy last minute LNAT tips that you can do today to get that top score on test day …
- Start reading newspapers, articles and magazines to find out what good sentences look like
- Make a list of common question types and what you can do to deal with them
- Test with the timer next to it and continue for exactly 8.5 minutes per round
- Write essays about your favourite topics and your most disliked topics, compare them and find a way to be good at writing about topics you don’t like – a balanced view that considers both sides of the topic is something examiners would want to evaluate!
LNAT Tip 2. Start as early as possible
The sooner you start, the less you need to dive into a full-time practice law exam, but it’s never too early to get used to the test format, question types, and essay topics. In particular, expand your reading and go to the non-fiction section of the library to see if you can find books on popular current discussions in science, politics, law, media and education. Or, if you don’t like the book, one out our LNAT essay tips is to check out the online newspaper or watch TED talk on YouTube while you’re preparing for school. In this way, you will have a better understanding of the topic of the LNAT essay by the time you pass the law exam.
LNAT Tip 3. Identify common question types and patterns – create a handy bank of questions with different approaches
The more you practice, the more you will find that the LNAT test repeats certain types of questions. That’s good news! This means that you can create a familiar set of question types and write down the tricks you use to tackle those specific questions.
So, where do you begin with?
- Key Point Questions: Look again at the passage introduction and conclusions, these usually give you an idea of the author’s main points.
- Controversial Questions: Cover your answer choices, first write down what you think the answer is, and then choose the answer choice that is closest to what you wrote down.
- Which of the following statements can you conclude? Question: Think about what the author said and use it to move on to the next step. This is probably the conclusion
- Essay Question: Imagine you are discussing with a friend, what does he say? How do they critique your points?
LNAT Tip 4. Look at the question from different perspectives
Main question: Look at the intro again. In your essay, it is important to clarify the basics. This means a clear essay with some powerful discussions introduced in the topic text and developed in the paragraph. It also means making sure that your paragraph is always relevant to your argument and does not deviate from your point of view. Now that you’ve mastered the basics of these essays, it’s time to tackle some top-grade tricks. One of our tips for LNAT is to look at the essay from a new angle. In other words, expand the scope of your essay and think about why it’s important or how you can approach it in a whole new way. See this example.
Q – ‘Studying Law is much better than studying Art’ – Discuss
There are many things to consider here in most of our essays, we may want to consider employment aptitude, salary, skills, fun and more. We definitely want to start with these things and write a well-structured and discussed essay, taking into account both sides of the discussion. Once that’s done, the examiner can be impressed by thinking about how to approach the question from a new angle. A final sentence like this might be a good addition …
“Perhaps not thinking about whether a law school is better than an art school at the individual level, but learning both law and art at the social level. You need to consider the value. Artists can learn and benefit from the skills of lawyers, lawyers can learn and benefit from the skills of artists. LNAT Tip 5. Teach somebody else!
The best way to learn is through the lessons. One of our LNAT tips and tricks is to grab your mother, father, or even a friend, and talk through LNAT essays and a variety of LNAT questions to work on your best LNAT hints. Make this interactive and fun, and test yourself on various topics in a way that is easy for both of you. Use memory games, rhetoric or even flashcards to go over key concepts and ideology. This helps you think about the overall test and verify that your knowledge and skills at the top of your mind are correct on the test day.
LNAT Tip 6. All about the Timing
Timing is a killer in the LNAT. Skill does not mean much beyond a point, it is all about your approach and if you don’t get through the paper you are going to struggle to get a top mark. This is especially true when we remember that the LNAT is a multiple choice test, leaving an answer blank means you have 0% chance of getting the question correct, if you can rule a few answer options out you are heading towards getting half the answers correct (which is the average LNAT score!). You need to do your best to replicate the actual LNAT and practice under time conditions, find the questions you have the most chance of answering correctly and get to the end of the paper.
LNAT Tip 7. Confidence is Key
LNAT is very difficult and you rarely get the highest score up to the law exam. This can be discouraging and it’s easy to give up early if you don’t see any improvement in your score. Please do not give up. The skills you are learning in practice now will ultimately improve your score, even if you haven’t seen them yet. Impressed by the preparation for such a difficult test, keep in mind that the average LNAT is low and the score is taken into account along with many other parts of the application. A confident and calm candidate is always better than a stressed candidate, so do your best.
LNAT Tip 8. Completing Mock Exams
You should take a full practice exam before your law exam, this will help you in a host of ways including:
- Understanding the online exam format
- Consider how to meet the time limit
- Break down the law exam well to reduce the stress of the exam.
- Get used to sitting and concentrating for long periods of time
If you have a questionnaire, you can use it to create practice exams. You can then visit the LNAT website just before the exam date to take two formalized practice exams. Same as the law exam on the exam day.
LNAT Tips 9. Proactive Feedback
It can be difficult to know how strong your essay is, it’s not like the multi-choice section with the right and wrong answers. To craft a strong essay, another of our LNAT essay tips is to get feedback. So take the essay to someone, give them some background about it, how much time you need to write, and then really critique it. Please ask me to admit the mistake. Also, get their perspective on the topic, they might have additional points to add that you previously did not consider!

LNAT Tips 10. Looking for Clues
LNAT isn’t about hard facts and knowledge, it’s about inference and critical thinking skills, and how you choose to utilise and employ these. One of those skills is deduction, and from the information you get, you can solve something like a detective. Therefore, if you are asked the meaning of a word in an LNAT question and you don’t understand it, use the text to look it up. Look at the words surrounding the text and the inferences of the author of the sentence and choose the word that best suits your context.
