Advanced Diploma in Engineering – Level 3, as long as you can also get an A-Level in Physics and a Level 3 Certificate in Mathematics for Engineering

Admission Test for Cambridge Engineering CourseENGAA + Interview

The Engineering Admissions Assessment tests how candidates use and apply their pre-existing knowledge in unfamiliar scenarios. It consists of two multiple choice papers. Each is an hour long and tests both Mathematics and Physics.  This usually takes place in November.

Some colleges also require STEP, or the Sixth Term Examination Paper, which is a Mathematics examination consisting of up to two 3-hour examinations.  These comprise a mixture of pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics and usually take place in June.

What is Engineering at Cambridge?Engineering concerns the design of processes and products to solve problems in the real world.  This encompasses a variety of subjects and also requires creative reasoning skills, as well as a fundamental understanding of scientific concepts.

Structure of Cambridge Engineering CourseYear 1 – Students study Mechanical Engineering, Structures and Materials, Electrical and Information Engineering and Mathematical methods, sitting a written exam in each at the end of the year.  Students also complete several coursework activities and projects.

Year 2 – Students study a range of topics, such as Mechanics, Thermofluid Mechanics and Materials to a more advanced level. Additionally, students sit seven written exams at the end of the year.

Year 3 – Students specialise in a particular field, choosing a core discipline such as Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering or many others. Students will also complete an Extension Activity, introducing them to procedures in their chosen professional area.

Year 4 – Students specialise further, completing a major individual project with direct industrial input and application.

Teaching is provided through a mixture of lectures, practicals and projects which are all supervised by leading researchers in the respective field.
